Charleston SC- Back in Tess!

February 2024

After a month long trip to Patagonia (which you can read about here), the holidays and just life in general we are happy to get out on our first Airstream Adventure of 2024! We try to get away for a few days around my birthday- I’m not much of one for birthday celebration, but since it’s in the least pleasant of months a getaway to someplace warm is a great idea.

So we packed up Tess and headed down to Charleston SC. We’ve both been here before but neither of us had really explored the city- Melinda has raced here and I’ve spent time with my son and his Boy Scout troop on the USS Yorktown and visited Fort Sumter, but not much more than that.

We didn’t stay in Charleston proper- there are no real campgrounds there, so we stayed at James Island County Park. The prices were reasonable for the area and most of the campground has very pretty spaces- although we’d avoid sites 100/101 since our view consisted mostly of stored county vehicles! But the rest of them were quite nice. A lot for families to do- climbing wall, disc golf, giant chess/checkers. And the bath houses were clean so that’s also a plus! We have a video review here.

In Charleston we took a historic walking tour with Tommy Dew’s Tours– he was very informative, interesting and gave a great tour! His reviews all comment on how everyone seems to know him and that was certainly true! We had an outstanding late lunch at Magnolias– the food and service was excellent. We spent the rest of the day exploring all of the historic downtown we could see- just a beautiful city.

It is just a relaxed trip for us, no major hikes or anything but our other highlights were visiting Fort Moultrie, McLeod Plantation which explores the darker but important side of Charleston’s history, and Angel Oak, which is the largest Live oak east of the Mississippi and is truly spectacular. We must recommend the beers at Low Tide Brewing and the food at Bowen’s Island Restaurant – it’s a ROUGH road out there, and the place looks like a dive joint but the lowcountry food is deliciously authentic and served in huge quantities! And I kind of like any place that needs a 4×4 to get to…. ok it isn’t quite that bad, but it’s quite bumpy getting there!

Some pics of our trip and video as well!
