2024 Silver In The City + Music & Mustang Day

April 2024

Now that we’ve attended three other Silver in the City events, one Alumilina Rally and we have another urban rally planned, we’ve given up the idea that we aren’t rally people- so with great enthusiasm we spent 17 hours on a “light” polish of Tess and prepared for our 4th Silver In The City.

I know eventually I’ll have to give up maintaining Tess’ high level of polish, but until I do, I guess I’ll keep her as shiny as can- plus it makes Melinda smile. And it seems like a good idea to get her as shiny as I can before a rally- Airstreamers are the ones who usually appreciate the time it takes to maintain the finish. We had some rain as we started out on Thursday, which almost caused me to cancel the trip lest Tess get rain spots, but Melinda reminded me that Tess is no garage queen, she is built to used, loved and traveled in, so off we went- rain spots and all!

SITC was, as always, a well organized event. John and Terry are masters at making sure everything goes smoothly and even with rainstorms on Thursday night no one gets stuck and there are no delays into town Friday morning. We love how the people and city of York really roll out the red carpet and we spent Friday visiting with old friends like Geven and Ruth, and Lucius and Danielle, shopping in the local stores and making some new friends like Tracie and Michelle who are full timing for a year, Mike and Bernice who came up from Florida, and Jamie and Judy from Ohio. We hope to cross paths with all of them again in the future!

Saturday is open house and due, at least in part, to two news teams covering the event; we had what seemed to be a record turnout of locals to visit our rigs. We do enjoy open house day- it’s a bit exhausting though! In an effort to at least cut down on our two most frequent questions (Did you polish it yourself? and How long did it take?) I made a sign that explained our crazy polishing efforts. I think it cut down on the number of times we answered those, so I count it as a success.

On Sunday we couldn’t dilly dally much before leaving- we had a couple special events that I planned for Melinda that she knew about but didn’t know exactly what we were doing. Her first surprise was when we arrived home and my son had baked a celebratory “Mustang Day” cake. What is Mustang Day you ask? Well on April 14th 2020 Melinda heard a news story that it was the day the Ford Mustang was released to great fanfare back in 1964. Knowing I was a car guy and former 1966 Mustang owner she thought I’d be interested and shared it with me- to which I responded “of course, it’s Mustang Day…everyone celebrates Mustang Day. Didn’t you make a Mustang Day cake? I did! ” Of course I made this up and she was disappointed when there was no cake in the fridge. But this year, finally, I had arranged for my son to make one and when we got home, there in the fridge, was a home made Mustang Day cake. To say she was thrilled would be an understatement, and my son makes a great cake so it was thoroughly enjoyed! But we quickly had to get showered and dressed because I had tickets to the Winston-Salem Symphony and Chorus to hear Beethoven’s 9th (Ode to Joy)- one of my favorites and one I’d never seen in person before. It was an amazing performance and it capped of a wonderful weekend!

Some links to the video I shot, plus the news coverage of the events- see if you can see Tess or Melinda in her green vintage 60’s style dress!
