April 2023
Ok, considering we still don’t think of ourselves as rally people, we do LOVE going to Silver in the City! We are now familar with how everything works- if you want to be on the street, you’ve got to be at the staging area early on Thursday. So we got there even earlier than we did in 2022…and yet we were still near the back!
We have a problem though- the truck transmission no longer has much reverse and we really can’t back up. A lot of revs and noise to barely back up at all. After a quick discussion with the organizers, John and Terry, and they put us in a primo parking space where we can pull in and pull out, no backing required. They really are wonderful rally hosts!
We start to see people who are becoming good friends. The owners of the shiny Caravel that I had considered our main competition in the shiniest camper award category (which doesn’t actually exist), Gevin and Ruth show up and we are happy to see them again. Keith and Renae, in their beautiful 70’s era rig named Daisy and the Olive family with their polished trailer are all people we have become good friends with in the past few years. The vintage owners are their own subset of Airstreamers- we tend to be a bit more laid back and more likely to have heavily customized campers, probably because many of us started out with empty shells. Tess, of course, is mostly a refurbished original but we love seeing what the other vintage owners have done with their custom designs!
It is also becoming a tradition that some of our friends who don’t camp come down and visit with us, enjoy the festivities and live music… and maybe we’ll talk some of them into getting RVs of their own someday!
