Cooler Temps Needed! Roan Mountain TN

July 2023

Summer in the south is hot, but luckily it’s a muggy, damp and sultry heat. In need of a respite we headed up to the mountains of Tennessee, to Roan Mountain State Park, where the air was crisp and cool. We’d both been hiking on Roan, but had never camped there. It’s a beautiful park, but if you camp there with an RV you have to be very careful of the sites- our first one was rated for 25 feet, but even with our 22′ Tess we couldn’t fit into the spot. But we were joined by some of Melinda’s triathlon friends who had recently started touring in a beautiful camper van, and they fit into their space just fine. We all did a lot of hiking and the weather was perfect until Sunday, when the heavens opened up and the rain was so bad that even Melinda opted to take a ride back to the campground…. I’ll give up at drop of a hat (or rain) but she tends to be way more hardcore, so if she gives up, you know it’s bad!

We had some bingo and beer at Johnson City Brewing and amazing tapas at Timber! – I don’t know where they found the chef, but it is a must go to place for delicious and unusual food.
